Why a morning routine

Imagine this:

It’s 8:57 am.

You’re getting ready to start working.

You feel super energetic.

Your head is clear, cause you’ve written your thoughts in your journal this morning.

You’ve already had your coffee and a nutritious breakfast.

That breakfast will keep you going until noon, when you’ll eat the delicious lunch that you’ve prepared this morning.

At work, your hyper focused and you’re feeling yourself. You’ve got this.

When you finish work, you head straight home.

You don’t have to worry about rush hour at the gym, because your workout of the day a already done.

When you get home, you put your phone away, take off your bra and allow yourself to relax.

You don’t feel like scrolling on social media.

Then comes dinner time, and bedtime routine.

You get your workout clothes ready, set your alarm and go to bed actually excited to wake up the next morning.

That’s the power of a morning routine.

My morning routine for productivity

Having a morning routine is pure self-care.

Following a morning routine, or ritual, drastically improved my mood, energy and general wellness.

Following your own routine daily ensures that you take time for yourself every. single. day.

And when your life is busy, this is crucial.

I want to share my morning routine.

However, there is no rule, and there is no right or wrong.

Even I constantly adjust it.

And, just so you know, this exact morning routine for productivity that I’m sharing is written down in my reminders on my phone.

And I still look at it almost every morning.

Why?

It keeps me accountable.

Also, depending of where I am (I travel a lot) or the commitments I have, sometimes I need to change the order slightly.

So I adjust it in my phone. It might sound silly, cause a routine is supposed to become automatic, right?

Well for someone like me (aka ADHD) it’s necessary.

I need to look at it in the morning to remind myself what I should do next.

If I don’t, I’ll just start wasting time and before I know it, it’ll be lunch time and I won’t have accomplished anything.

My morning routine for productivity changes slightly depending on if I’m travelling or the commitments/appointments I have for the day.

workout morning routine

    • Wake up between 6 and 6:30am
    • Drink a glass of water
    • Work out at home with the Nike app
    • Make myself a coffee
    • Journal for 10 minutes drinking my coffee (this is also my cool down)
    • Getting ready (shower, skin care, etc.)
    • Write blog posts for 15-30 minutes
    • Audit of my social media (or any new habit I’m tracking to stay consistent)
    • Save 10 pins on Pinterest (another habit for my business)
    • Eat breakfast

By the time I finish my morning routine, it’ll be between 8 and 9am.

So in other words, by 9am in the morning, I:

    • Have exercised
    • Have drank water
    • Have had breakfast
    • Have journaled
    • Have created content for my blog/social media
    • Got dressed and ready
    • Am ready to work

How to start a morning routine from scratch

I won’t lie to you.

Creating that morning routine was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

There’s no way I implemented all those habits all at once.

I started veeeeery slowly.

In fact, this is exactly the morning routine I started with:

    • drink a glass of water

That’s it.

And believe it or not, I would forget every other day.

So here’s what I did:

    • created a new list in my reminders called “Morning Routine”
    • wrote down “drink a glass of water”
    • set up that reminder to go off repeatedly, every single morning at the same time
    • Every single morning, I checked off the reminder after I drank my water (it disappears once you check it and that’s very satisfying)

And I did that for days, weeks and months until I didn’t need the reminder anymore.

Until drinking a glass of water became a habit.

And then, I repeated.

I added one single item to my list: working out.

Whew.

That one was the hardest ever.

I didn’t like it at all.

For a looooong time.

Every morning when my alarm went off, I hated myself for making that decision.

But I would do it anyway: Drink my glass of water, then exercise.

Oh and don’t think that I went to the gym and spent 2 hours there.

No no no.

I used the Nike app to work out at home.

And I carefully chose workout that would last no more than 15 minutes.

Yup.

That’s how I started.

Now here’s what I want you to do right now:

Open your reminders and write down one habit you’re going to add to your routine.

Then set a daily recurring reminder.

Finally, let me know in the comments below what it is you just wrote down! (Honestly do it, it’s going to hold you accountable for following through)
